I'm so glad we found the modern while we are visiting NYC. We were looking for a quality place to have lunch with a nice view, good food, and something unique to New York. Waitress Maya was hands-on perfect service! She gave us a few of her favorite suggestions on the menu and did not steer us wrong. My only complaint is everything was so tasty rich and I couldn't try everything I wanted to! This restaurant is as it name, very modern, very clean, and beautiful aesthetic. We sat outside on the terrace for lunch and the weather was perfect. We had a view of the museum of modern art sculptures. The bread and butter itself is worth coming here! I have not tasted butter like this since last dining at a Michelin star restaurant in Paris! We started with the puff pastry, which was Emma's recommendation and it was amazing ! I could not help but say with every bite . The flavors just burst on your tongue . So savory and delicious ! We also ordered the shrimp toast , which had so many flavors and was so rich and indulgent that we couldn't order anything else , after that. This dish left us completely satisfied and full. The combination of the fresh dill shrimp, red peppers and the delicious very rich sauce paired so lovely together . They told us this was new to the menu . I think it's a keeper ! On our way out, I was sneaking a photo of the beautiful kitchen and they were so accommodating and invited me in! I got to take a video and a few pics for my food blog PureJoyLifestyle.com ! The kitchen was impeccable and it was fun to watch the chefs at work ! I learned that we could dine at the chefs table inside the kitchen, the next time we visit. We will definitely be back to try so many more things on this menu. I'm sure it will be a completely different ambience for dinner, as well!

Stopped by The Bar Room for a quick lunch while spending a solo day at the MOMA. I was able to enter from the museum which was a nice touch and took a seat at the bar. Service was quick and efficient. For lunch I had the squash with chickpeas with was a nice light bite before continuing my day at the museum. The dining room was pretty empty when I arrived around noon but was hopping by the time I headed out around one. Great option if you are in the area.

Innovative cuisine! Impeccable service and vibrant, welcoming, relax ambience. The mixes of flavors and well designed menu will satisfy every expectation. Be there for "tapas" with a good wine and cocktail selection or for the whole extraordinary dinning experience. The Modern is a must.

I came by on the weekend for lunch during restaurant week. Make a reservation early because they go quick! The bar room is still small bar area off from the main dining room, a bit more casual than the main dining room. We started off with cocktails, and the apple martini was one of the most refreshing martinis I've had. We started off with steak tartare and salmon crudo. The potato wedge that came with steak tartare was so perfectly crispy and a perfect balance to the steak tartare. Salmon crudo nicely paired with a sweet and tart vinegrette and plums. For entrees we had the fish and lobster ravioli. The fish was sitting in a decadent seafood broth and the lobster ravioli actually had nice pieces of lobster in it. Service was great. Overall a nice meal.

This is a review from August 2024 during restaurant week. This was my 2nd time at the Bar Room. Having been also to the regular dining room at The Modern, the Bar Room is like the more casual cousin although directly across and in the space, it provides a lighter-feel atmosphere. Arctic char - Salty/ sour pungent sauce very citrusy , slight fishy aftertaste for first bite but overall good Steak tartare- Loved this dish. Crunchy potato exterior. Smooth not too chewy. Not overpowering Sea bass - clean, soft - nice texture - not too well done . Really tasty - the sauce adds an additional element of flavor. The vegetable piece has a nice crunch that adds contrast Lobster ravioli - soft, smooth, not too chewy, nicely done Al dente, creamy. Good pasta : lobster filling ratio. Peach profiterole - There is raspberry sorbet inside which adds a surprising chill and tartiness. Lemon pain Perdue: Not super lemony, very very sweet - tastes like a deconstructed compact French toast Overall, a very solid meal. Nice atmosphere and pleasant service.

Came here for restaurant week and it was delicious. We got 2 3 course dinners along with oysters and a tarte. I didn't eat the oyster but my friend said that the flavor was great--the sauce on top was a good addition. The tarte was really good and I wish I had more of it. The steak tartare was my favorite thing. The flavoring was amazing--I actually had it 2 years ago and could not forget about it. The crab pasta was good but I personally didn't find it too special--probably could've saved the premium on it.

We came back here for summer restaurant week. Everyone in our party ordered the Arctic char, roasted chicken with leeks and hazelnut, and peach Melba profiterole. We added a order of PEI oysters. The arctic char was light and delicious, with well balanced flavors of sweetness of the fish and plum and sourness of the vinaigrette dressing. The oysters were very fresh and tasty with flavor of kumquat. The roasted chicken was rich and flavorful with moist chicken and crispy skin. The leeks added a touch of sweetness and the hazelnut made the dish more aromatic. I liked my dessert not too sweet so I poured only a touch of the rum caramel sauce by myself. Although I enjoyed the peach profiterole but the peach was overpowered by the raspberry sorbet in the center. It should be called raspberry profiterole. The service was efficient and the ambience was modern minimalistic. We enjoyed our food every time we came, would definitely return for more.

Summer Restaurant Week Menu 2 Courses $45, 3 Courses $60 - - - - - - - - ~ Roasted chicken, leek vinaigrette & fresh hazelnuts ~ [Rating: 4.5/5] Chicken dishes often lean towards the ordinary, but this one was a pleasant surprise! The fresh hazelnuts paired with the subtly flavoured leek vinaigrette brought a new level of complexity to the dish. The chicken breast was tender and juicy, with a perfectly crisped thin layer of skin, even the fat beneath it was delectable! ~ Cured arctic char with apricots & smoked eggplant ~ [Rating: 3.75/5] The arctic char is fresh and rich, with its natural fattiness beautifully complemented by the sweet and fruity apricots. However, the oil drizzle feels excessive, making the overall dish a bit too greasy. ~ Steak tartare with crispy potatoes ~ [Rating: 3.75/5] The steak tartare is just what you'd expect, with a classic presentation under a pool of emulsified gribiche sauce. What truly stood out, though, were the crispy, fluffy potatoes - an absolute highlight that added a wonderful texture contrast and won me over completely. ~ Sea bass with charred romano beans & sofrito ~ [Rating: 3.25/5]Unfortunately, the sea bass left little impression. While tender, it was otherwise unremarkable and quickly forgotten. - - - - - - - - Overall Rating: 3.75/5 Will I be back? Maybe There are some nice elements in selected dishes, especially the chicken dish! The portion is quite small for us. We are still really hungry after 2 courses, and thought having a third course would not make any difference and a waste of money. But I'd love to come back and try out the a la carte menu at the modern!

Food - 5 Value - 3-4 Service / Ambiance - 5 The Bar Room at The Modern is an excellent spot to have great food in a classy yet not over-the-top setting...just be ready to pop open the wallet at the end of the night. I've gone twice now and recently discovered it's on the InKind pass, which made for a nice little splurge on an extra appetizer. Highly recommend if you have this as it boosts the value of this dinner a ton. THE FOOD - * Steak tartare w/ crispy potatoes - Both times we've gotten this entree and both times it hits the mark. The crispy potatoes are a unique, delicious piece compared to other restaurants which serve low-effort potato crisps. This is on top of the bread the Modern also provides. * Caviar hot dogs - LOL. These were 100% gas but we wouldn't have ordered it if it weren't for the InKind pass. Really wanted a way to hit that $150 minimum but I didn't want to drink, hence these crazy but delicious little treats. I'd be probably singing a different tune if I paid $40 for them but they were fire and you can't tell me otherwise. * Lobster pasta / Sea bass - Main courses at The Bar Room are all excellent - they're tasty and plated well. I would love for the portions to be about 10-15% larger...of course, it's a higher end place, but for a $40+ dish (that isn't packed with caviar on top) you'd hope for a bit more THE SERVICE - Continues to be great as always. We went for our anniversary (yes this was a few months ago, and the menu has changed I believe) and they brought out a little chocolate tart to celebrate. Thank you! Is this restaurant pricey? Yes, 100% - and there's a certain amusement in recognizing the folks on the other side of the barrier in The Modern are balling out at $250pp tasting menus. Did I have a great (even if maybe a bit less filling) dinner both times? 100%. Deserving of a 5 star rating

Always enjoy the excellent cuisine at the Bar Room at the Modern, but this time the new menu items were outstanding. I had the pea soup which was amazingly delicious (not like mom's). I then had the a roast chicken which was truly the best I have ever had! Yes as a home chef myself, I want to see how fine chefs do chicken and this was the best! I have had it at many places worldwide but this literally was the best! Love all dining experiences at the Modern; the dining room, the kitchen and the Bar Room. All outstanding!
